Meet the Owner: Beverley Isibor

Beverley Meya

Where are you based?
I am based in London, England.

When did you launch?
I launched December 1st 2019.

How and why did you come up with the idea?
I came back from work one day and my mum shouted at me for always leaving my wigs on the sofa. I hated leaving my wigs in drawers, plastic bags and mannequin heads because it will eventually get tangled and dry due to poor location conditions. The following month I drew a draft design of a feasible wig storage as a result of not finding anything suitable online. After drawing the design, I decided to carry out a mini market research on my twitter to understand where people store their wigs. Results revealed most wig owners kept their wigs on door handles or drawers. Two years after the twitter poll, I released the Wig Hangers and launched The Meya Store brand.

What barriers / obstacles did you have to overcome and how did you do it?
The imposter syndrome was certainly an obstacle that took me two years to overcome. Starting was a big problem because I wanted everything to be perfect before I released the product. However, I came to the realisation that I will not have everything right at first and I need to be prepared to grow because mistakes are inevitable in the business process and that is perfectly ok.

What is different about your product and brand?
My product is different because it offers a unique solution to a prevalent wig problem. My product also goes the extra miles to ensure hair is maintained well with the provision of satin fabric which sets us apart from competitors. The Meya Store brand is different because its aims to elevate the beauty experience by creating and designing innovative products with an inclusive approach for consumers and hairstylists in the wig industry.

What are your plans for the future?

The Meya store plans to rebrand in 2021 to open new avenues of tackling problems in the beauty world, especially with our growing community of Black women, Cosplayers, Drag Queens and individuals experiencing hair loss. This will most likely look like introducing new products, changing the name of the brand and product and enhancing the product design of our current product.

Are you looking for funding / investment?
Yes! The potential of the brand to further its presence in the wig industry is exceptional.
